Bubble-nest construction is a nesting strategy where the male creates a floating nest from air bubbles. He coats the bubbles with a sticky mucus secreted by his mouth, which binds them together into a cohesive structure. This mucus-glued nest helps keep eggs near the surface where oxygen is more available and gives the eggs a protected, stable place to develop. The male generally guards the nest and tends the eggs until they hatch. Other reproductive strategies, such as laying eggs in a site away from a nest or giving birth to live young, don’t involve bubble nests, so this pattern is unique to bubble-nest builders.
